Swim Lessons

Youth Learn to Swim Lessons are regularly held at the Shawano Pool. Participants must furnish their own suits and towels. Patrons are also asked to shower prior to entering the pool. Classes are between 30-45 min. Please visit our Registration page for current session information. Fees vary based on length, number of classes, and residency.    Typical class fees range from $11.00-$28.00. 

TOTS & INFANTS (6mo-2yr)*- Basic water skills are taught through a variety of games and free play for children and adults.  Comfort and confidence with the water is the main objective.  Safety and skills are also introduced. An adult must accompany the child during this class. Water wings and water toys are available for use during this class. Families may provide their own floatation device.

3 & 4 YEAR OLD- This parent/child class is designed to build confidence and adjustment to water as basic water skills are introduced. Blowing bubbles, breath control, leg, and arm swimming are all practiced with the use of water wings. Water safety topics and fun age-appropriate games will also be enjoyed. Families may provide their own floatation device.

5 YEAR OLD- This class is designed to continue confidence and adjustment to water as basic water skills are taught. Instruction and practice of front/back glides, rhythmic bobs, and introduction to arm and leg skills. Water wings are typically worn at this age. Water safety topics and fun age-appropriate games will also be enjoyed. 

BEGINNER (6 years +)- This class will focus on orientation to the water, elementary swimming skills, water safety, and games.  Skills taught in this class are front crawl, elementary backstroke, side stroke, dolphin kick, breath control, and treading water.  

ADVANCED BEGINNER- Children must pass the Beginner course to register for this class. This class will focus on developing the fundamentals of swimming. Swimmers will strengthen their skills of the front crawl, elementary backstroke, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly,  and side stroke. Swimmers will also work on newer skills, such as treading water, dives, and open turns.  In addition to swim development, children will also practice water safety and enjoy skill practice games. 

INTERMEDIATE/SWIMMER- Children must pass the Advanced Beginner course to register for this class. This class will focus on Skill Refinement while gaining strength and endurance in the water. Swimming strokes and water skills are refined to help swimmers improve efficiency and power in the water.  Swimmers will also have the opportunity to practice advanced skills such as surface dives, deep water object dives, endurance swims, and flip turns. 

PRIVATE SWIM- Private learn-to-swim classes are available upon request. The private class fee is $10.00 for 30 min. Please contact Aquatics Coordinator, Tara Kelliher at 715-526-6171 ex 8954 or tkelliher@cityofshawano.com for more information.

*Stairway is in the pool during this time for ease of entry. An ADA-compliant pool lift is available upon request.
