The refuse should be put at the curb on the regular garbage day. Larger items such as furniture, appliances, and scrap metal may also be placed at the curb for collection. All waste should be properly prepared and separated for pick up. Different trucks will be picking up the different piles of refuse. Residents should leave the refuse out for the following day if it has not been picked up on the regular garbage day.
All refuse should be separated into the following piles: Garbage, Recyclables, Yard Waste, Leaves, Brush and Wood, Construction and Demolition Material, and Miscellaneous larger items. Garbage should be placed in the City issued cart. Recyclables are to be placed in the City issued cart with the blue lid. Please remember that cereal boxes and soda cartons are considered paper.
The leaf picker will also be out during this time. City residents should have their loose leaves to the curbside on their normal scheduled garbage collection day. Grass and leaves can be raked to the terrace, but DO NOT rake any debris into the street. Also, residents may take yard waste to the city compost pile located at the landfill on Rusch Road.
Residents may also place yard waste and leaves in paper 30 gallon capacity bio-degradable bags or plastic containers (not plastic bags) and set at the curbside on the normal garbage collection day. Please remember that if you place yard waste in a plastic container, a “Shawano Yard Waste” sticker must be placed on the container clearly visible to the collection crew. Yard waste stickers are available at the City of Shawano Department of Public Works office, City Hall, and the Park and Rec Department.
THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS WILL NOT PICK UP ANY PLASTIC BAGS THAT ARE FILLED WITH LEAVES OR YARD WASTE.
PLEASE NOTE: THE LIMIT OF 6 BAGS OR CONTAINERS OF YARD WASTE WILL BE WAIVED FROM APRIL 19 – APRIL 30, 2021.
Bulky limbs and cuttings from trees and shrubs must be cut into four foot lengths and tied in bundles not more than two feet in diameter. Wood and brush should not be placed in a container or garbage can. Please place this directly on the curb. All property owners are responsible for disposing of entire trees that are left at the terrace for collection. You may also bring your own brush and wood to the landfill. Bringing your own brush and wood to the landfill will help the crew to stay on schedule with the rest of the waste collection.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL WOOD THAT IS PAINTED, STAINED, TREATED, OR IS PLYWOOD IS CONSIDERED DEMOLITION MATERIAL.
Construction material should also be separated on the terrace into these piles: Rock, Brick and Cement, Clean Wood, Metal, and Miscellaneous Material (such as roofing and sheet rock). If the waste consists of many small loose pieces, it is best to place the waste in boxes or bags for easier pick up. REMINDER: Property owners are responsible for disposing of larger amounts of demolition material left at the curb for collection.
City officials ask residents to remember the following important points:
The city will not accept any liquid waste. All paint cans and solvents should be left uncovered to evaporate or harden before they can be collected.
Used oil, anti-freeze, and batteries can be taken to the landfill which is located on Rusch Road.
The city landfill will be open on Saturdays starting April 10th from 8:00 AM to Noon for your convenience. People with questions concerning clean-up procedures can call 715-526-3512.
