Building InspectION
ATTENTION CONTRACTORS, HOMEOWNERS, AND LANDLORDS
If you are planning any type of construction, siding, roofing/re-roofing, remodeling, electrical, plumbing, or install/replace heating, ventilating and/or air conditioning (HVAC) project for your home or business contact the Zoning Administrator/Building Inspector BEFORE you begin. City Ordinance and State Statutes require tripled fees if started without a permit.
Further, Contractors MUST have their Dwelling Contractor (DC) number AND their Dwelling Contractor Qualifier (DCQ) number before a permit can be issued. Landlords that own one and two family properties and do not live in them also need to have these certificates. Homeowners that live in their home may pull permits but must sign a Cautionary Statement.
The City requires permits for fences, swimming pools and signs (new/altered). Permits must be acquired BEFORE the fence, pool or sign is erected.
Decks and Exits including 2nd story exits on to flat roofs shall comply with State Building Codes 321.225, 321.14, 321.15(2)(f), 321.16, 321.02, 321.04 and 321.10. Please click here to view the updated State of Wisconsin Code for decking (which the City follows), which was effective January 1, 2016.
Solid Fuel Burning appliances (this includes pellet stoves and fireplaces) may NOT be installed in a garage unless listed for that application per State Building Code Section 323.045(2)(b).
Information regarding the State Codes can be found at http://dsps.wi.gov/Programs/Industry-Services/Industry-Services-Programs.
Fire pits and portable fire appliances must be located at least 15 feet from a lot line. Fire in fire pits or appliances must be no larger than 3 feet in diameter and extend no more than two feet above the pit or appliance per City of Shawano Municipal Code Section 8.02(1)(d)(a-b). For a complete copy of the ordinance contact City Hall at 715-526-6138.
