Youth Swim Lessons
The Shawano Park & Recreation Department adheres to American Red Cross guidelines when teaching swim lessons. Listed below is a general description and a list of skills to be taught at each level.
- Participants must furnish their own suits and towels. Swim caps are not required.
- Showers must be taken prior to entering the pool.
- Lockers are provided but patrons must supply their own lock.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (age 6 months thru 4 years)
TOTS & INFANTS
This class is designed with an emphasis on parental participation and involvement. Basic water skills that develop coordination and confidence will be taught. One adult per child is required to be in the pool.
FOUR YEAR OLDS (4 year olds only)
This class is designed with an emphasis on water adjustment and orientation. Instruction will be given on elementary water skills including: bubble blowing, breath control and swimming with water wings.
FIVE YEAR OLDS (5 year olds only)
This class is designed with an emphasis on water adjustment and orientation. Instruction will be given on elementary skills including: front/back float, rhythmic bobs and swimming on front/back.
BEGINNER: LEVELS I, II, III (6 YEARS AND OLDER)
Prerequisites: None (entry level class).
Purpose: To orient students to the aquatic environment and teach elementary swimming skills.
Skills to be worked on include: Front crawl, beginning diving, back crawl, dolphin kick.
ADVANCED BEGINNER: LEVEL IV
Prerequisites: Level III certificate or competency in Level III skills.
Purpose: Develop swimmer’s strength and confidence in front/back crawl and elementary backstroke while introducing breaststroke and sidestroke.
Skills to be worked on include: front/back crawl, treading water, elementary backstroke, introduction to breaststroke and sidestroke.
INTERMEDIATE: LEVEL V
Prerequisites: Level IV certification or competency in Level IV skills.
Purpose: Refine the key strokes presented thus far. Swimmers are also introduced to the butterfly, open turns and feet-first surface dives.
Skills to be worked on include: front/back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke and intro to butterfly.
SWIMMER: LEVEL VI
Prerequisites: Level V certification or competency in Level V skills.
Purpose: Polish strokes learned in previous levels. Swimmers improve efficiency, power and smoothness of each stroke.
Skills to be worked on include: front/back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, approach stroke and flip turn.
